Kareri Lake trek is a beautiful trek with a freshwater high altitude tarn situated 2,934 meters above sea level and a less explored trekking destination in the Dhauladhars. It is also known as the gateway to the Chamba Valley and shepherds opt for the Kareri-Minkiani Pass & Baleni Pass to cross over the Dhauladhars.
Kareri lake trek begins near a bridge after crossing the Kareri village. The beginning part of the trek is moderate but once you cross the stream you’ll find it pretty and serene. On the other side of the lake, there are a few Gaddi-kothis.
From early December until March and April, the lake is frozen. The lake is a perfect getaway for extended weekend trekking.
Kareri lake trek is meant for beginners and experienced trekkers as well.
Pick point and drop point is ISBT, Dharamshala. Dharamshala is well connected to all major cities of India
By Air: Kangra Airport is the Nearest Airport. You can get here by connecting flights from New Delhi and Chandigarh Airports. Flight to Kangra airport is expensive.
By Train: The nearest railway station is Pathankot Railway Station from there you can take a bus or taxi to Dharamshala. You’ll get a direct bus to Dharamshala from Pathankot Which is 85 km and takes 3 to 4 hours.
By Road: Overnight buses run from New Delhi to Dharamshala. You can also get buses to Dharamshala from Shimla, Manali, Dehradun, Chandigarh, Jaipur, Jammu, Amritsar and Pathankot.
We recommend you to book a flight to either New Delhi or Chandigarh airport and then take an overnight Volvo to Dharamshala. Himachal state govt. Volvo bus ‘Himsuta’ is the most trustworthy and comfortable bus service on this route. Whichever bus you choose, make sure to reach Dharamshala at-least by 7-8am.
Taking a bus from Chandigarh is the best option as it takes 7 hours to reach here.
Once you reach ISBT, Dharamshala or Govt. Bus stand. Team HRI will take care of your further travel. Dharamshala bus stand is a pick and drop point.
The best time to do Kareri lake trek is around the year except monsoons like last week of June to early days of September. In winter months, due to snow & cold, the trek becomes a little challenging but it’s doable with expert guides and you’ll experience a snow trek in January to March.

Today you will be moving to Kareri Lake which is at the height of 9,800ft. The trail will surprise you as you will walk through Oak, Pine and Rhododendron trees.
The trail also passes through small water streams and rivers. It will take almost 4-5 hours to reach the lake as it has some steep climbs. Enjoy the beauty of Dhauladhar range and the lake view.
Later you'll be return to the base camp.

We head back to the same trail treading through oak, pine trees which would take between 3-4 hours and back from there to Dharamshala by taxi, will reach Dharamshala around 4 in the evening. Drop point would be ISBT, Dharamshala.

You must have to carry both original & copy of valid Govt. Id (Any of Passport or Aadhar card), NOC form (by participant), Medical Fitness Certificate (signed by a registered MBBS doctor with stamp), Passport size photos along with you, Insurance and submit them to Trek Lead/Guide at Kareri during briefing.
Toilet tents would be there at Kareri lake campsite. Basically, we use dry toilets which is one of the best way to answer nature call in the wilderness.
Dry toilets means, we dig a pit and keep mud & shovel so once you are done with your business you can cover it up using mud. It is the most hygienic way in the mountains.
You should carry toiletries as we mentioned in the things to carry/essentials.
At our Panarsa home stay we have western & Indian toilets.
In one tent, three people in Dome tent and four people in Alpine tent.
Please specify if you want a tent for one or two people when making your reservation. It will be for an additional fee.
We place a premium on the safety of young women. Our entire mountain team and guides have a high level of trustworthiness. There are many solitary female tourists who journey with us, so don't be concerned. We would advise everyone to look after their belongings.
With eggs, we give a delicious Indian vegetarian meal. Jain food is also offered upon request; please inquire at the time of booking.
Your load will depends on things that are packed by you in the sack. On an average trekker's carry between 4-5 kg of weight with clothing’s, cameras, energy bars, dry fruits, water bottle etc. Off-loading option available on extra cost. Please ask while bookings. We advise you to pack light.
In any case of any emergency our mountain staff is skilled and trained for such situations held at mountains. Our team always carry first aid kit, oximeter and portable oxygen with us and in any emergency we'll rescue the trekker till the road head. All of the costs of rescue/evacuation, hospitalization is to borne by the trekker. Overall, it is the trekker's responsibility to obtain a certified medical fitness document prior to the trek, certifying that the trekker is physically fit for the journey.
Trek preparations are already done previously. We will be offering you any alternate trek or voucher having similar value for money in case of natural calamities. In case of non-completion of trek due to weather conditions, administrative or Govt. ban, local strike or anything which is beyond our control there won't be any refund. No, you won't be able to connect to the internet during your walk. Please send this to any worried family members ahead of time.
Because good trekking shoes are the most vital component of the walk, you must be extremely cautious while purchasing them. Always buy .5 or 1.0 extra size for better results. They must be waterproof. Decathlon sells trekking shoes from Quechua and other well-known brands. Don't come to trek with sports shoes, they are worst on trek.
Without a doubt, no. During the walk, smoking and drinking are strictly prohibited. On higher altitudes, this causes dehydration, which invites Acute Mountain Sickness. We advise against bringing such items with you.
No you won’t find any charging point. You have to carry a power bank to charge your phone & digital camera.
