Kuari Pass means Doorway. Kuari Pass Trek is also known as Lord Curzon’s trail and he was the first one to cross this beautiful trail. The trail is blessed with oak trees, deodar forests and untouched Rhododendron. It provides 360 stunning views of the Himalayan peaks like Kamet, Dronagiri, Hathi Godhi, Kamet Dronagiri, Bertholi, Trishul, Mana, Neelkanth.

Kuari Pass is the only trekkable Himalayan pass which can be done in winters.

Kuari Pass is a scenic trek covered under a thick blanket of snow during winter. There are a lot of surprises on the way to the trail. It is not a very tough trek, perfect for beginners & all mountain lovers. Even experienced trekkers can do this trek. Kuari Pass is open throughout the entire year.

How to Reach

Karchhi & Tuganshi villages are the base villages for Kuari pass trek. It is 12 km from Joshimath. Joshimath is a town located in Chamoli district of Uttarakhand. Joshimath has a good connection to Rishikesh, Haridwar and Dehradun.
Rishikesh is a well-established tourist destination and known as ‘Yoga Capital of World‘. There are plenty of hotels, hostels, and guest houses for you to stay. 

We recommend landing at Delhi International Airport. Book a cab or overnight Volvo is the most convenient mode of travel to reach Rishikesh from Delhi. Stay a night in Tapovan, Rishikesh and rest before you start the trek. Join us from Tapovan for Kuari pass trek.

Nearest Airport: Jolly Grant Airport, Dehradun is the closest airport. Which is 20 km from Rishikesh and 268 km from Joshimath. Airport is closer to Rishikesh. There are daily flights operating from Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore, Hyderabad to Dehradun airport.
Nearest Railway Station: Rishikesh junction is the nearest railway station. Haridwar is also well connected to the rail network that connects to major cities of India. From Haridwar you can book taxi or travel to Rishikesh by shared cab or local bus. 
By Road: You can find overnight Volvo Bus from ISBT Kashmere Gate, Delhi to Rishikesh. Volvo buses need advance booking especially during peak season of travel like X-mas, New Year, Republic Day or long weekends. We advise you to book in advance.

Itinerary

Day 1: Rishikesh to Joshimath

Joshimath Altitude: 6,700 feet

• Drive 260 km, 10 hours
• Trekkers will be picked from Tapovan, Rishikesh at 5:30 am.
• 6:00 p.m. is the expected arrival time at Joshimath.
• Tea with Briefing/Orientation, check list

Our representative will pick you up from Rishikesh early in the morning and head towards
Joshimath. Enjoy the beautiful ride and watch out for the loft mountains. Overnight stay will be in rooms at base village.

Keep handy: water bottle, camera, wallet, jacket, cap and rest at main baggage, which will be placed on the top of the vehicle.

On the way places to see:
• Devprayag (confluence of Bhagirathi and Alaknanda) 'Where Ganga Starts'
• Rudraprayag (confluence of Mandakini and Alaknanda)
• Nandprayag (confluence of Alaknanda and Pindar).

Day 2: Trek to Camp 1

Gulling or Akhrot Getha Altitude: 9,200 feet

Today will be an exciting day, get ready for some adventurous day. We will leave after breakfast. To avoid the cold wind, keep a jacket with you. But if the sun is up, you don’t have to trek with a full sleeve T-shirt would do and a fleece.

As you walk there will be a water source, the trail leads through the village. It is an enchanting village, where you will get to experience the local culture. After this you will find yourself walking amidst the oak forests. The trail then further opens up to vast meadows blessed with many wildflowers.

Day 3: Trek to Khullara

Altitude: 11,000 feet | Khullara Camp

• Trek 4 kms, 4-5 hours

• mixed forest of Oak, Rhododendron (mostly pink and white), & walnut

You will be very happy to reach the campsite as the entire team will be waiting for you to serve hot beverages, lunch at a lovely campsite. Dinner and sleep early for tomorrow is summit day.

Day 4: Kuari Pass Top

Max. Altitude: 12,500 feet - Kuari Pass Top

• Summit Day
• Trek 15 kms, 10-11 hours

• strenuous ascent to Kuari Pass, toughest day
• Carry enough Water, no water source enroute
• mixed forest of Oak, Rhododendron (mostly pink and white), & walnut

The trek will leave you speechless because of the charming views. You cannot stop gushing over the scenery which you will get to witness as you reach the top of Kuari Pass. It will take around 4 to 5 hours to reach the Kuari top. It is the highest point on the trail. The pass is just 700 meters, just like 40 minutes away.

Along the trail you will be welcomed by the beautiful mountains like Neelkanth, Nanda Devi, Hathi Godha Parvat, Dronagiri, Pangarchulla and Chaukhambha. The perfect spot to click photos and take videos especially for photographers and vloggers.

After spending some time as per weather conditions and availability of time, we will head back from the same route to the campsite by late afternoon. Rest in camps. Soup and dinner will be served.

Day 5: Back to Base Village

The views keep on getting better each day. Today’s view will surely blow up your mind. Walk 1 km and you will be out of the forests. It is a steep climb. Nanda Devi is clearly visible. It is the second highest mountain in India. The narrow path follows the mountain on one side and a steep drop on the other side. You have to make sure you stay with the team. Do not walk alone.

Now after a hectic trek, it's time for you to have tea and relax.

Day 6: Joshimath to Rishikesh (drive)

On the last day of Kuari Pass Trek, drop to Tapovan, Rishikesh will be provided.

• Drop by 7pm at Tapovan, Rishikesh.
• Schedule further bookings by 9pm with buffer time.

What documents do I have to carry for Kuari Pass Trek?

You must have to carry both original & copy of valid Govt. Id (any of Passport/Aadhar card/Driving License), Disclaimer form (by participant), Medical Certificate (signed by a registered MBBS doctor with stamp), 2 passport size photos along with you and submit them to Trek Leader at base during briefing.

What is the difficulty level of the Kuari Pass Trek?

The trek to Kuari Pass is easy-moderate in difficulty level, however, it varies depending on snow and weather conditions. Otherwise, it's the only trekkable himalayan mountain pass in winter. Recommended for all age groups & first timers.

How big are the groups?

We at HRI believe in the concept of 'Small batches' that improve quality & focus and help trek leaders to connect all members. For private & customized groups, there's no limit of group size.

How many trekkers will be in one tent?

We use 3 person Dome & Alpine tents at our campsite. There will be three persons accommodating in one tent. If you want a tent for One or Two, please ask while booking. Customization available at an extra cost.

What kind of toilet facility are you providing?

Toilet tents would be there at campsites. We use dry toilets, means, we dig a pit and keep mud & shovel so once you are done with your business you can cover it up using mud. It is the most hygienic & one of the best ways to answer nature calls in the wilderness.

As we indicated in the things to carry section, you should bring toiletries.

What type of food is served during trek?

We serve nutritious Indian vegetarian food with eggs. Jain food is also available on request, please ask while booking.

Is it possible to hire a porter/mule to help me discharge my rucksack?

Yes, trekkers' rucksacks can be off-loaded for an additional fee. Please inquire throughout the booking process. We'll make the necessary arrangements for off-loading in advance.

Which type of shoes should I buy for Kuari Pass Trek?

The good trekking shoes are the most vital component of the walk, you must be extremely cautious while purchasing them. Always buy .5 or 1.0 extra size for better results. They must be waterproof. Decathlon sells trekking shoes from Quechua and other well-known brands. Don't come to trek with sports shoes, they are the worst on trek.

Can take or have smokes or liquor on the trek?

Without any doubt NO. During Kuari Pass Trek, smoking, drinking or any restricted substances are strictly prohibited. On higher altitudes, this produces dehydration, which invites Acute Mountain Sickness. We are not responsible for any mishap.

We strongly advise you not to bring such items with you, as you will be disqualified and sent back in the middle of the trek.

How much weight do I have to carry?

Your load will depend on things that are packed by you in the sack. On an average trekker's carry between 8-10 kg of weight with clothing, cameras, energy bars, dry fruits, water bottles etc. We advise you to pack light & only essentials.

Backpack Off-loading option available on extra cost. Please ask while booking.

Kuari pass trek experience

I just wanted to say Thank you to heavenridersindia for everything they did to make this trip one of the most enriching experiences of my life. I have never experienced travel with leaders who attended to every detail with such dedication. Our trek leader Mr vishal thakur is quite amazing person. I owe it all to the wonderful hotels,food,tours,treks,people etc that was arranged. I will always have a treasure box of these memories. Thank you for hepling me to fill it. Planning my future treks with one and only heavenridersindia. The best trip ever.
