The Char Dham Yatra is one of Hinduism’s most revered pilgrimage circuits, located in the Garhwal Himalayas of Uttarakhand. It covers four sacred shrines established by Adi Shankaracharya in the 8th century. The pilgrimage is believed to cleanse accumulated karma, fulfil dharmic duty, and bring devotees closer to moksha — liberation from the cycle of rebirth.

The traditional west-to-east clockwise sequence is:

    • 1st Stop: Yamunotri — Source of River Yamuna, dedicated to Goddess Yamuna
    • 2nd Stop: Gangotri — Source of River Ganga, dedicated to Goddess Ganga
    • 3rd Stop: Kedarnath — One of 12 Jyotirlingas, dedicated to Lord Shiva
    • 4th Stop: Badrinath — Dedicated to Lord Vishnu (final dham)

Most journeys begin from Haridwar, Rishikesh, or Dehradun.

Yes, registration is compulsory for all pilgrims. The Uttarakhand government requires online registration and eKYC before starting the journey. After registering, pilgrims receive a QR-based Yatra Pass, scanned at multiple checkpoints.

A fee of approximately ₹50 per person per shrine applies.

    The two ideal windows are:

    • May – June: Peak season with stable weather, full services, and clear views. Book accommodation well in advance.
    • September – October: Post-monsoon with crisp air, autumn colours, and fewer crowds.

Avoid July–August due to heavy monsoon rains, frequent landslides, and road closures. April near the opening can include snowfall with temperatures between -2°C and 11°C.

Yes, many senior citizens complete the yatra safely with the right travel mode. Helicopter packages or assisted travel plans with pony rides and palki services are strongly recommended. Seniors must obtain a medical fitness certificate in 2026. Consult your doctor, carry all medicines, avoid overexertion, walk slowly, and stay well-hydrated.

Yes, with proper planning. With improved road connectivity, digital registration systems, and helicopter services, the yatra is more accessible than ever. However, the high-altitude terrain, unpredictable weather, and steep treks (especially Kedarnath) demand physical and logistical preparation. Travelling with a guided group or a reputed tour operator is strongly recommended for first-timers.
