Buran Ghati Trek

Discover the Buran Ghati Trek with Heaven Riders India

Overview

Walking through the secluded villages, passing through dense forest, hopping in to beautiful
meadows, Buran Ghati is one of the treks with perfect views, multiple kinds of terrains and
different moods of nature. Views of different landscapes as you cross each village will
leave you spellbound.

The panoramic view from Buran Pass is one of the best you can get. The trail after the pass is a
straight wall where you have to slide for the most part of it. This bit can be technical at times &
rope may be required for ascending down the considerably straight face of ice.

The trek is recommended for people who have done at least one multi-day Himalayan trek.
Starting from Janglik in Himachal Pradesh, one will pass through Dayara, Litham, Dunda and Barua.
A perfect summer trek to start with!

Why the Buran Ghati Trek Stands Out

Most Himalayan treks give you one kind of terrain — either forest, or meadows, or glaciers. The Buran Ghati Trek is different. It’s often called a “crossover trek” because it links the Pabbar Valley with the Kinnaur region, and along the way, it offers a bit of everything.

You’ll begin in the quiet village of Janglik, walk through dense forests of oak, pine, and rhododendron, climb into open meadows carpeted with wildflowers in summer, visit the sacred and strikingly blue Chandranahan Lake, and eventually stand atop the Buran Pass at roughly 15,000 feet. From there, the trail descends through a steep snow wall — one of the most talked-about sections of any trek in Himachal Pradesh — before leading you down into Barua village, surrounded by apple, apricot, and pear orchards.

Few treks in India offer this kind of variety in just seven to eight days, which is exactly why the Buran Ghati Trek has become such a favourite among both first-time high-altitude trekkers and seasoned mountain lovers.

Buran Ghati Trek Quick Facts

Before we dive into the details, here’s a quick snapshot of what this trek involves:

  • Location: Pabbar Valley, Shimla district, Himachal Pradesh (extending toward Kinnaur)
  • Starting Point: Janglik village, roughly 150–180 km from Shimla
  • Trek Distance: Approximately 35–42 km depending on the exact route and side trips
  • Maximum Altitude: Around 15,000 ft (4,572 m) at Buran Pass
  • Duration: 7 to 8 days, including travel from Shimla
  • Difficulty Level: Moderate to difficult
  • Best Time to Trek: Mid-May to late June, and mid-September to mid-October
  • Suitable For: Trekkers with some prior high-altitude experience

Now let’s break each of these down so you know exactly what to expect on the trail.

How Difficult Is the Buran Ghati Trek?

The Buran Ghati Trek is generally rated moderate to difficult, and it’s important to be honest about what that means before you sign up. The first few days are manageable for most reasonably fit individuals — steady climbs through forest and meadow terrain. The real challenge is concentrated around the Buran Pass crossing, where you’ll face a rapid gain in altitude, cold temperatures, and a steep snow wall descent that isn’t recommended for solo or inexperienced trekkers.

This is also why altitude sickness, or AMS (Acute Mountain Sickness), is a genuine concern on this route. Proper acclimatisation, staying well hydrated, and pacing yourself rather than rushing are essential. At Heaven Riders India, our itineraries are built with adequate acclimatisation days and experienced trek leaders who monitor every member of the group closely, especially in the days leading up to the pass crossing.

If you’ve already completed one or two moderate treks in the Himalayas and have a reasonable fitness base, the Buran Ghati Trek is an excellent next step. If this would be your very first high-altitude trek, we’d recommend building up some trekking experience first, or joining our trip with extra preparation guidance from our team.

Best Time to Do the Buran Ghati Trek

Timing plays a big role in how you experience this trek, since the two main trekking windows offer very different landscapes.

Summer (mid-May to late June): This is peak season for the Buran Ghati Trek, and for good reason. The meadows are alive with wildflowers, streams are flowing freely, and there’s still enough snow on the pass to make that iconic snow-wall descent possible. If the thrill of sliding down a snow wall is what drew you to this trek in the first place, summer is your best window.

Autumn (mid-September to mid-October): This season offers a completely different but equally rewarding experience. The skies are exceptionally clear, visibility is at its best, forests take on golden and amber hues, and the weather tends to be more stable overall. Snow on the pass may be limited during this window, so the descent is less about sliding and more about a steady, careful walk down.

Both seasons have their charm, and which one you choose really depends on whether you’re chasing wildflowers and snow adventure, or clear mountain views and stable weather. Our team at Heaven Riders India can help you pick the batch that matches what you’re looking for.

We’d generally advise against attempting this trek during the monsoon months (July–August), as the trail becomes slippery, river crossings get riskier, and visibility drops significantly.

What to Pack for the Buran Ghati Trek

Packing right for a trek of this nature can make the difference between an enjoyable journey and a miserable one. Here’s a general checklist we recommend to everyone joining our Buran Ghati Trek batches:

Clothing

  • Moisture-wicking base layers (avoid cotton)
  • Fleece or down jacket for cold evenings and the summit day
  • Waterproof and windproof outer shell jacket
  • Trekking pants (quick-dry, not jeans)
  • Thermal inners for higher altitudes
  • Woolen cap, sun cap, and neck gaiter
  • Waterproof gloves, plus an inner fleece pair

Footwear

  • Broken-in, ankle-high trekking shoes with good grip
  • Extra pair of socks (wool-based, several pairs)
  • Camp shoes or sandals for evenings at the campsite

Gear

  • A 50–60 litre rucksack with a rain cover
  • Trekking poles (highly recommended for the descent)
  • Headlamp with extra batteries
  • Personal first-aid kit and any prescribed medication
  • Reusable water bottles or a hydration bladder
  • Sunglasses with UV protection (essential near the snow)
  • Sunscreen and lip balm with high SPF

Documents

  • A valid ID proof
  • A medical fitness certificate, especially if you’re above 60 or have any pre-existing conditions

Our team shares a detailed packing list with every trekker who books with Heaven Riders India, along with guidance on rental gear if you don’t want to buy everything for a single trip.

Permits and Preparations

The Buran Ghati Trek requires a forest department permit, along with a valid ID and, in many cases, a basic medical fitness certificate. Trekkers coming through the Kinnaur side of the route generally don’t require an Inner Line Permit for this particular trail, though regulations can be updated by local authorities from time to time.

At Heaven Riders India, we handle all the necessary permits and paperwork as part of your trek package, so you don’t have to worry about navigating local formalities on your own. All we ask is that you send us your documents in advance, and we take care of the rest.

Why Trek the Buran Ghati Trek with Heaven Riders India

There are plenty of operators offering the Buran Ghati Trek, so it’s fair to ask what makes booking with us worthwhile. Here’s what we bring to the table:

Experienced Trek Leaders: The descent from Buran Pass isn’t a section to take lightly. Our trek leaders are trained in handling technical sections, including rope support where needed, and they carry the experience to make quick, safe decisions if weather or trail conditions change.

Small Group Sizes: We prefer smaller batches over large, unwieldy groups. This means better pacing, more personal attention, and a genuinely more connected trekking experience.

Focus on Acclimatisation: We don’t rush our itineraries. The days built in for acclimatisation, particularly around the Chandranahan Lake excursion, are non-negotiable in our planning because we’d rather trekkers reach the pass strong and healthy than push through unnecessary risk.

Quality Camping and Meals: Good food and proper rest matter more than people expect on a high-altitude trek. We ensure warm, nutritious meals and reliable camping equipment throughout the trip.

Transparent Planning: From permits to packing lists to a clear breakdown of costs, we believe in keeping our trekkers informed at every stage, well before they even set foot on the trail.

Safety-First Approach: We carry the necessary safety and medical equipment on every batch, and our leaders are trained to recognise early signs of altitude sickness and respond appropriately.

Who Should Attempt the Buran Ghati Trek?

This trek is best suited to individuals who already have some trekking experience, ideally at least one moderate Himalayan trek under their belt. If you’re comfortable walking for 6–8 hours a day with a daypack, have decent cardiovascular fitness, and are mentally prepared for a physically demanding summit day, you’re a good fit.

That said, the Buran Ghati Trek isn’t reserved only for the highly experienced. With the right preparation, guidance, and a fitness routine in the weeks leading up to the trek, first-time high-altitude trekkers with a reasonable fitness base can also take it on successfully, especially when trekking with a supportive team like ours.

We recommend starting a basic fitness routine at least four to six weeks before the trek — a mix of cardio (running, cycling, or brisk walking), strength training for your legs and core, and some stair climbing with a loaded backpack to simulate trail conditions.
