trekkers alike.
There are hundreds of treks scattered across Uttarakhand, so what makes Dayara Bugyal stand out from the rest? Here are a few compelling reasons why this trek continues to attract thousands of trekkers every year:
Unlike many high-altitude treks that demand technical skills and extreme fitness levels, the Dayara Bugyal Trek is beginner-friendly. The gentle gradient and well-marked trails make it accessible to first-time trekkers, families, and even children above a certain age (with proper guidance).
The word “bugyal” means alpine meadow, and Dayara Bugyal is exactly that — a vast, rolling carpet of green grass stretching as far as the eye can see. Walking through these meadows feels like stepping into a dream, especially when wildflowers bloom in the months of May and June.
From the summit and campsite areas, trekkers are treated to jaw-dropping views of some of the tallest peaks in the Garhwal Himalayas, including Bandarpoonch, Kala Nag (Black Peak), Gangotri group of peaks, Draupadi Ka Danda, and Jaonli. These 360-degree panoramic views are one of the biggest highlights of the Dayara Bugyal Trek.
The trail passes through dense oak and pine forests, home to a variety of Himalayan flora and fauna. Birdwatchers and nature photographers will find plenty to capture along the way.
This trek can be completed in just 4 to 5 days, making it ideal for working professionals or students who want a quick Himalayan getaway without taking too much time off.
Dayara Bugyal is located near the town of Uttarkashi in the Garhwal region of Uttarakhand, India. The trek base camp is usually set up at Raithal or Barsu village, both of which are small, picturesque hamlets that offer a glimpse into traditional mountain life.
How to Reach the Base Village
Raithal is the base village and trek starting point. Raithal is 180km from Dehradun. Dehradun is
well connected to all major cities of the country.
Nearest Airport: Joly Grant Airport, Dehradun is the nearest airport.
Nearest Railway Station: Dehradun is the closest railway station.
Road Connectivity: Dehradun is well connected with national capital Delhi through highway. Delhi
is 275km from Dehradun. Book a cab to reach Dehradun or overnight Volvo is most convenient
mode of travel to reach Dehradun from Delhi.
One of the best things about the Dayara Bugyal Trek is that it can be attempted almost throughout the year, with each season offering a completely different experience.
This is the most popular time for the Dayara Bugyal Trek. The weather is pleasant, the meadows are lush green, and wildflowers add bursts of color to the landscape. Daytime temperatures range between 10°C to 20°C, while nights can be cooler.
Trekking during the monsoon is generally not recommended due to slippery trails and the risk of landslides in the region. Most trekking companies, including Heaven Riders India, pause operations during peak monsoon months for safety reasons.
Post-monsoon, the skies clear up beautifully, offering some of the best visibility of the Himalayan peaks. The meadows turn golden-brown, creating a stunning contrast against the blue sky. This is considered one of the best times for photography enthusiasts.
Winter transforms Dayara Bugyal into a snow-covered wonderland. This is the best time for trekkers who want to experience snow trekking and enjoy activities like snow camping. The Dayara Bugyal Trek in winter is particularly popular among those seeking a magical, snowy Himalayan experience, though it requires proper gear and warm clothing due to sub-zero temperatures.
The Dayara Bugyal Trek is classified as an easy to moderate trek, making it one of the most accessible high-altitude treks in Uttarakhand. Here’s what you need to know about the difficulty:
This makes the Dayara Bugyal Trek an excellent choice for beginners who want to test their trekking abilities before attempting more challenging Himalayan treks.
Packing the right gear can make or break your trekking experience. Here is a checklist recommended by Heaven Riders India for the Dayara Bugyal Trek:
Heaven Riders India provides a detailed packing list and gear guidance to every trekker who books the Dayara Bugyal Trek with us, ensuring you are fully prepared before hitting the trail.
The trek route offers a rich diversity of Himalayan flora and fauna, making it a treat for nature enthusiasts.
The lower stretches of the trail pass through dense forests of oak, deodar, and rhododendron trees. As you ascend, the landscape transitions into open meadows dotted with a variety of alpine flowers, especially vibrant during the summer months.
Keep your eyes peeled for Himalayan monal (the state bird of Uttarakhand), Himalayan griffon vultures, and if you are lucky, sightings of musk deer or the elusive Himalayan black bear in the surrounding forests.
Many trekkers often wonder how Dayara Bugyal compares to other popular treks in the region. Here’s a quick comparison:
Dayara Bugyal vs Kedarkantha: Both are beginner-friendly winter treks, but Dayara Bugyal offers larger meadow expanses, while Kedarkantha is known for its summit views.
Dayara Bugyal vs Chopta Chandrashila: Chopta offers temple visits and a higher summit point, while Dayara Bugyal focuses more on the meadow experience with a shorter, easier trail.
Dayara Bugyal vs Har Ki Dun: Har Ki Dun is a longer trek with valley views, whereas Dayara Bugyal is shorter and more suited for those with limited time.
If you are looking for a quick, scenic, and relatively easy Himalayan escape, the Dayara Bugyal Trek is hard to beat.
At Heaven Riders India, we believe that every trek should be more than just a physical journey — it should be a transformative experience. Here is why thousands of trekkers choose us for their Dayara Bugyal Trek adventure:

We work closely with local villages like Raithal and Barsu, supporting local homestays, guides, and porters, contributing to sustainable tourism in the region.
Every great trek carries a story, and Dayara Bugyal is no exception. Local legends say that the meadow was historically used as grazing land by shepherds from the nearby villages of Raithal and Barsu, who would bring their sheep and cattle up to these high pastures during the summer months. Even today, if you visit during the peak season, you might spot local shepherds herding their livestock across the same meadows that trekkers now walk through for leisure and adventure.
The name “Bugyal” itself comes from the local Garhwali language, referring to the high-altitude alpine meadows found across the Uttarakhand Himalayas. Dayara Bugyal is considered one of the largest and most beautiful bugyals in the entire state, often compared to the meadows of Switzerland for its scenic charm, which has earned it the nickname “the Switzerland of Uttarakhand” among trekking enthusiasts.
The region also holds cultural significance for the local communities, who have depended on these meadows for generations for grazing and seasonal migration. As trekking tourism has grown, villages like Raithal and Barsu have transformed into welcoming base camps, offering homestays and guided treks while still preserving their traditional way of life.
For photography enthusiasts, the Dayara Bugyal Trek offers no shortage of stunning frames. Here are some tips to help you capture the best shots during your journey:
Golden Hour Shots: The early morning and late evening hours cast a warm golden light across the meadows, creating dramatic contrasts against the snow-capped peaks in the background. Plan your best shots around sunrise and sunset.
Wide-Angle Lens: Given the vastness of the meadows, a wide-angle lens helps capture the true scale of the landscape, from the rolling grasslands in the foreground to the towering peaks in the distance.
Star Trails and Night Photography: Since the campsites are far from city lights, the night sky at Dayara Bugyal offers incredible visibility of stars. Carry a tripod if you are interested in capturing long-exposure shots of the Milky Way.
Macro Shots of Wildflowers: During the summer months, the meadows are dotted with tiny wildflowers. A macro lens or a phone’s macro mode can help you capture these delicate details up close.
Drone Photography: If you carry a drone, always check local regulations and permissions beforehand, as certain areas near the Indo-China border region may have restrictions on drone usage.
As trekking tourism grows in popularity across Uttarakhand, it becomes increasingly important to protect the fragile ecosystems of high-altitude meadows like Dayara Bugyal. Heaven Riders India is committed to promoting responsible trekking practices, and we encourage all our trekkers to follow these principles:
By following these simple guidelines, trekkers can help preserve the natural beauty of Dayara Bugyal for generations to come.
If you have extra time after completing the Dayara Bugyal Trek, there are several nearby attractions worth exploring in the Uttarkashi region:
Uttarkashi Town: Known for the ancient Vishwanath Temple, Uttarkashi is a spiritually significant town along the banks of the Bhagirathi River.

Every small detail was taken care of, and the entire trip felt well-organized and stress-free. I created memories for a lifetime. I don't post reviews at all but for this I had to. Thanks to heaven riders, I managed to complete one of the most difficult courses in high altitude mountaineering. This would not have been possible without the brilliance of our mentor Mr. Vishal Thakur. Under his leadership and guidance, the whole week was packed with adventures and learnings. I would also like to thank Ms. Kalpana, who made all the ends meet with her patience and constant coordination with us. Everything was handled very seamlessly. Heavenridersindia team is indeed very professional. Thank you so much 🙏🏻Posted on Google AbhishreeTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. I have no words to express my gratitude to Mr. Vishal Thakur and his team. I went for an ice climbing course to Spiti valley with their team. This is supposed to be one of the toughest courses at high altitude areas. In chilling temperatures of minus 28 degrees, tough climbs at high altitudes as well as scaling the whole waterfall, Vishal Thakur was an absolute epitome of leadership and technical expertise. He believed in me more than I did in myself. The course was an absolute success! I will definitely be coming back for the advanced course! Everything from the logistics to the stay to the food and the teaching was managed impeccably. As a special mention, I want to thank Ms. Kalpana as well who was coordinating with me throughout the journey and made sure she was available even in the wee hours of the morning without a single complaint. The whole team clearly works for a common purpose.Posted on Google Swastika GangulyTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google.
