Start and End points of the trek: Kareri Village
Altitude: 2,941 metres
Duration: 3 Days, 2 Nights
Kareri Lake Trek distance: 25 km
Difficulty Level: Easy – Moderate
Best time: December end to March end (Snow Trek), April to June, September t0 Mid December.
Kareri Lake trek is a beautiful trek with a freshwater high altitude tarn situated 2,934 meters above sea level and a less explored trekking destination in the Dhauladhars. It is also known as the gateway to the Chamba Valley and shepherds opt for the Kareri-Minkiani Pass & Baleni Pass to cross over the Dhauladhars.
Kareri lake trek begins near a bridge after crossing the Kareri village. The beginning part of the trek is moderate but once you cross the stream you’ll find it pretty and serene. On the other side of the lake, there are a few Gaddi-kothis.
From early December until March and April, the lake is frozen. The lake is a perfect getaway for extended weekend trekking.
Kareri lake trek is meant for beginners and experienced trekkers as well.
The Kareri Lake Trek stands apart from other Himachal treks for a simple reason — it delivers a genuine high-altitude experience without extreme difficulty. Located at an altitude of roughly 9,600 feet (about 2,934 to 2,950 meters) in the Dhauladhar range, Kareri Lake, also known as Kumarwah Lake, is a shallow, glacier-fed freshwater lake so clear that you can often see straight to its bed.
Unlike the more crowded and commercial trails around Dharamshala and McLeod Ganj, the trek to Kareri Lake still retains a raw, untouched character. You’ll walk through oak and pine forests, cross the Nyund stream over rustic wooden bridges, pass through open meadows used by Gaddi shepherds for grazing, and finally arrive at a lake framed by the towering Dhauladhar peaks. A small temple dedicated to the local deity sits on a hilltop overlooking the water, adding a spiritual touch to the trek.
For travellers who want their first taste of Himalayan trekking, or for city dwellers craving a quick reset in nature, the Kareri Lake Trek checks every box: accessible, scenic, moderately challenging, and deeply peaceful.
Kareri Lake lies in the Kangra district of Himachal Pradesh, south of the main Dhauladhar ridge. It is fed by melting snow from the surrounding peaks, with the Nyund stream serving as its outflow. Because the lake is shallow and its source is fresh snowmelt, the water remains remarkably clear throughout the trekking season.
From December to around March or April, the lake freezes over completely, transforming into a striking sheet of ice framed by snow-draped mountains. As temperatures rise in late spring, the ice melts, and the lake returns to its glassy, turquoise-tinted self, ready to welcome trekkers once again.
Please note that swimming in Kareri Lake is not advisable. The glacial water is extremely cold, and the lake’s remote location means help isn’t readily available in case of an emergency. It’s best enjoyed as a visual and spiritual experience rather than a swimming spot.
One of the biggest draws of the Kareri Lake Trek is its accessibility. This trail is generally classified as easy to moderate, making it suitable for beginners with a basic level of fitness as well as seasoned trekkers looking for a relaxed outing. That said, a few sections — particularly the final stretch approaching the lake — involve a steeper, rockier climb that requires a bit of stamina and sturdy footwear.
Because the trail doesn’t involve technical climbing, glacier crossings, or extreme altitude gain, it’s an excellent choice for:
If you’re new to trekking, we recommend a few weeks of light cardio and leg-strengthening exercises before attempting the trek, simply to make the ascent more enjoyable and reduce fatigue.
HOW TO REACH for Kareri Lake Pick point and drop point is ISBT, Dharamshala. Dharamshala is well connected to all major cities of India
By Air: Kangra Airport is the Nearest Airport. You can get here by connecting flights from New Delhi and Chandigarh Airports. Flight to Kangra airport is expensive.
By Train: The nearest railway station is Pathankot Railway Station from there you can take a bus or taxi to Dharamshala. You’ll get a direct bus to Dharamshala from Pathankot Which is 85 km and takes 3 to 4 hours.
By Road: Overnight buses run from New Delhi to Dharamshala. You can also get buses to Dharamshala from Shimla, Manali, Dehradun, Chandigarh, Jaipur, Jammu, Amritsar and Pathankot.
We recommend you to book a flight to either New Delhi or Chandigarh airport and then take an overnight Volvo to Dharamshala. Himachal state govt. Volvo bus ‘Himsuta’ is the most trustworthy and comfortable bus service on this route. Whichever bus you choose, make sure to reach Dharamshala at-least by 7-8am.
Taking a bus from Chandigarh is the best option as it takes 7 hours to reach here.

Choosing the right season can make or break your trekking experience, and Kareri Lake is no exception. The ideal window for the Kareri Lake Trek falls between May and November, with two particularly favourable stretches:
May to July: This is peak summer in the plains, but at Kareri Lake’s altitude, temperatures stay pleasantly cool. The forests are lush and green, wildflowers dot the meadows, and the lake is fully thawed, offering the clearest views of its glassy waters.
September to November: Post-monsoon and into autumn, the skies clear up dramatically, offering some of the best mountain visibility of the year. The forest takes on golden and rust tones, and the trail is generally drier and easier to walk, making this a favourite window for photographers.
Monsoon Season (July to August): We generally advise caution during the monsoon months. Heavy rainfall can make the trail slippery, streams can swell unpredictably, and landslides are a real risk in this region. If you’re set on trekking during this period, it’s essential to go with an experienced local team like Heaven Riders India, who understand the terrain and can make real-time calls on safety.
Winter (December to April): Kareri Lake freezes over in winter, and heavy snowfall makes the trail extremely difficult and, at times, inaccessible. Unless you’re an experienced winter trekker equipped for sub-zero conditions, this season is best avoided.
No, previous trekking experience is not necessary for Kareri lake trek as it is suitable for beginners.
Kareri lake is located at an altitude of 2,941 meters above sea level which is 9,650 in feet.
Heaven Riders India offers you an opportunity to experience the best Kareri Lake trekking in Dhauladhars. The trip starts and ends at the famous tourist destination ‘Dharamshala‘.
The trail to Kareri Lake is as much about the journey as the destination. Along the way, you’ll pass through dense forests of oak, pine, and rhododendron, which burst into colour during the spring months. The trail follows the Nyund stream for much of its length, with wooden bridges offering charming crossing points and photo opportunities.
Wildlife sightings, while not guaranteed, are a real possibility here — the region is home to Himalayan black bears, leopards, and a variety of bird species. Even if you don’t spot larger animals, the meadows are often dotted with grazing sheep and cattle tended by local Gaddi shepherds, adding a pastoral charm to the higher stretches of the trail.
The final approach to the lake, though steeper, rewards you with an increasingly dramatic view of the snow-capped Dhauladhar peaks, making the last push well worth the effort.
Choosing the right trekking partner matters just as much as choosing the right trail. Here’s what sets Heaven Riders India apart when it comes to the Kareri Lake Trek:

I don't post reviews at all but for this I had to. Thanks to heaven riders, I managed to complete one of the most difficult courses in high altitude mountaineering. This would not have been possible without the brilliance of our mentor Mr. Vishal Thakur. Under his leadership and guidance, the whole week was packed with adventures and learnings. I would also like to thank Ms. Kalpana, who made all the ends meet with her patience and constant coordination with us. Everything was handled very seamlessly. Heavenridersindia team is indeed very professional. Thank you so much 🙏🏻Posted on Google AbhishreeTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. I have no words to express my gratitude to Mr. Vishal Thakur and his team. I went for an ice climbing course to Spiti valley with their team. This is supposed to be one of the toughest courses at high altitude areas. In chilling temperatures of minus 28 degrees, tough climbs at high altitudes as well as scaling the whole waterfall, Vishal Thakur was an absolute epitome of leadership and technical expertise. He believed in me more than I did in myself. The course was an absolute success! I will definitely be coming back for the advanced course! Everything from the logistics to the stay to the food and the teaching was managed impeccably. As a special mention, I want to thank Ms. Kalpana as well who was coordinating with me throughout the journey and made sure she was available even in the wee hours of the morning without a single complaint. The whole team clearly works for a common purpose.Posted on Google Swastika GangulyTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google.
