Kedarkantha Trek

Plan your Kedarkantha Trek with Heaven Riders India

Overview

Kedarkantha Trek is the most famous winter Trek in India. It is situated in the Garhwal Himalayas and has some of the loveliest campsites. From the summit, you’ll witness the 360-degree views of the famous 13 peaks of the Himalayas.
It is recommended for all adventure souls who like snow & high mountains.
Kedarkantha Trek will lead you to the gorgeous mountains, and picturesque and grand views. The trek starts from Sankri passing through the beautiful Park of Govind Wildlife Sanctuary which is home to many wildflowers and animals. We will then come across Juda Ka Tal, which is surrounded by lush pastures and oak trees, and maple forests.
The starry nights will leave you in awe as you get to witness the milky ways with your naked eyes while camping close to the lake. This gives you enough time to relax and cherish quality time with your friends. Once you summit the peak, the feeling inside is great satisfaction and a treat to the eyes.
Heaven Riders India offers you an opportunity to witness the amazing Himalayan views and experience.

What Makes the Kedarkantha Trek So Special?

The Kedarkantha Trek is often called the “Queen of Winter Treks,” and it lives up to the title. Unlike many high-altitude treks that demand technical climbing skills or previous trekking experience, this trail is beginner-friendly while still offering the thrill and grandeur of a true Himalayan expedition.

Here’s why trekkers from across the country and abroad keep coming back to this trail:

  • Panoramic summit views: From the Kedarkantha summit at approximately 12,500 feet, you get uninterrupted views of Swargarohini, Bandarpoonch, Black Peak, Ranglana, and the Rupin-Kinner Kailash ranges.
  • Snow guarantee: Between December and March, the trail is almost always blanketed in fresh snow, making it a favourite for those chasing a true winter wonderland experience.
  • Dense pine and oak forests: The trail passes through thick forests of pine, oak, and maple, offering a refreshing contrast to the open meadows and snowfields higher up.
  • Beginner-friendly difficulty: Rated easy to moderate, the Kedarkantha Trek is ideal for those attempting their first Himalayan trek.
  • Short duration, big reward: At just 4 to 6 days, it fits comfortably into a long weekend, making it perfect for working professionals and students.

Best Time for the Kedarkantha Trek

The Kedarkantha Trek is a year-round destination, but each season offers a distinctly different experience:

December to February (Peak Winter): This is when the trek transforms into a true winter wonderland. Expect fresh snowfall, temperatures dropping well below freezing at night, and some of the most dramatic snow-covered landscapes in the Indian Himalayas. This period is extremely popular, especially around the New Year.

March to April (Spring): The snow begins to melt, revealing lush green meadows dotted with rhododendron blooms. Trekking conditions are slightly easier, and the views remain spectacular.

May to June (Early Summer): Ideal for those who prefer moderate weather without heavy snow. The trails are clearer, and days are pleasantly warm.

Monsoon (July to September): Generally not recommended due to slippery trails and reduced visibility.

For trekkers specifically chasing snow, December through February remains the best window, while March offers a nice balance of snow at higher altitudes and greenery lower down.

Difficulty Level and Fitness Requirements

The Kedarkantha Trek is graded easy to moderate, making it one of the most accessible high-altitude treks in India. That said, a reasonable level of fitness is still essential, especially given the cold temperatures and altitude gain.

To prepare, we recommend:

  • Cardiovascular training: Jogging, cycling, or swimming for at least 30 to 40 minutes, four to five times a week, in the month leading up to the trek.
  • Strength training: Basic bodyweight exercises like squats and lunges to build leg strength for the climbs and descents.
  • Practice hikes: If possible, a few local hikes with a loaded backpack help simulate trekking conditions.
  • Breathing exercises: Since the trek does involve altitude gain, simple breathing practices can help with acclimatization.

No prior technical mountaineering experience is required, which is part of why this trek is such a popular choice for beginners looking to break into Himalayan trekking.
