Kuari Pass is the only trekkable Himalayan pass which can be done in winters.
The Kuari Pass Trek sits at an altitude of roughly 12,516 feet (3,800 meters) above sea level, in the Chamoli district of Uttarakhand. What makes this trek special isn’t just the pass itself, but the incredible panorama it offers along the way. From the ridgeline, trekkers get uninterrupted views of some of the tallest peaks in the Garhwal Himalayas, including Nanda Devi, Dronagiri, Kamet, Mana Parbat, Neelkanth, Hathi Parbat, and Chaukhamba. On a clear day, it genuinely feels like you’re standing at the edge of the world with an entire mountain range spread out in front of you.
Unlike many high-altitude treks that demand technical climbing skills or extensive prior experience, the Kuari Pass Trek is accessible to trekkers with moderate fitness and some basic trekking background. This balance of accessibility and grandeur is exactly why it has become such a popular choice among adventure seekers in India.
Another reason trekkers love this route is its diversity of landscapes. You’ll walk through dense oak and rhododendron forests, open meadows, quaint Himalayan villages, and finally snow-laden ridgelines as you approach the pass. Few treks pack in this much variety within a five- to six-day itinerary.
Timing plays a huge role in how you experience this trek, and the Kuari Pass Trek can actually be attempted across multiple seasons, each offering a distinctly different experience.
Winter (December to February): This is when the Kuari Pass Trek transforms into a snow-covered wonderland. If you’re chasing that classic postcard image of snow-draped trails and frosted pine trees, winter is your season. Do note that temperatures can drop well below freezing, especially at night, so proper cold-weather gear is essential.
Spring (March to April): As the snow begins to melt, the region bursts into color with blooming rhododendrons lining the trail. This season offers a lovely mix of lingering snow patches at higher altitudes and greener trails lower down.
Autumn (September to November): For those who prefer clearer skies and crisp mountain air without the intensity of deep winter snow, autumn is an excellent choice. Visibility is usually at its best during this period, making it ideal for photography and unobstructed views of the surrounding peaks.
Most trekkers, including many who join us at Heaven Riders India, prefer the winter months for the sheer beauty of a snow-covered Kuari Pass, but if you’re new to high-altitude treks or want a slightly gentler experience, spring or autumn might suit you better.
The Kuari Pass Trek is generally classified as a moderate trek, making it accessible to a wide range of trekkers, from enthusiastic beginners to experienced hikers. That said, “moderate” doesn’t mean “easy” — some sections involve steep ascents, especially closer to the pass, and in winter, snow-covered trails can add an extra layer of challenge.
A reasonable level of cardiovascular fitness is recommended before attempting this trek. We generally advise trekkers to start preparing at least four to six weeks in advance with activities like jogging, stair climbing, and basic strength training. This preparation goes a long way in helping you enjoy the trek rather than merely surviving it.
Altitude is another factor to keep in mind. While Kuari Pass isn’t as extreme as some Himalayan treks that cross 15,000 or 16,000 feet, altitude sickness can still affect trekkers if acclimatization isn’t handled properly. This is why our itineraries build in adequate rest and acclimatization days.
How to Reach for Kuari Pass
We recommend landing at Delhi International Airport. Book a cab or overnight Volvo is the most convenient mode of travel to reach Rishikesh from Delhi. Stay a night in Tapovan, Rishikesh and rest before you start the trek. Join us from Tapovan for Kuari pass trek.
One of the most underrated aspects of the Kuari Pass Trek is the sheer ecological richness of the trail. As you move through different altitude zones, the landscape shifts dramatically. Lower sections of the trek are blanketed in dense oak forests, gradually giving way to rhododendron groves that turn the hillsides shades of red and pink during the blooming season.
Higher up, the forest thins into alpine meadows, locally known as “bugyals,” which offer expansive, open views and serve as some of the most memorable campsites on the trek. Wildlife sightings, while not guaranteed, are always a possibility — the region is home to Himalayan monal pheasants, musk deer, and occasionally, if you’re lucky, signs of the elusive snow leopard in the higher reaches.
This blend of forest, meadow, and high-altitude terrain is part of what makes the Kuari Pass Trek feel like a complete Himalayan experience packed into a relatively short itinerary.
Choosing the right trekking partner can significantly shape your overall experience, and this is where Heaven Riders India stands apart. We aren’t just about getting you from point A to point B — we focus on creating a safe, well-organized, and genuinely enjoyable journey through the mountains.
Experienced and Certified Guides: Our trek leaders are locals with years of experience navigating the Garhwal Himalayas. They understand the terrain, the weather patterns, and how to keep groups safe while ensuring everyone gets the most out of the trek.
Small Group Sizes: We believe smaller groups lead to better experiences — more personal attention, better pacing, and a stronger sense of camaraderie among trekkers.
Safety First Approach: From proper acclimatization schedules to carrying necessary safety and first-aid equipment, we prioritize the well-being of every trekker on our Kuari Pass Trek batches.
Quality Camping and Meals: Comfortable tents, warm sleeping bags, and nutritious meals are non-negotiables for us. A good trek isn’t just about the trail — it’s also about how well you’re taken care of at the end of each day.
Sustainable Trekking Practices: We’re committed to responsible tourism, following Leave No Trace principles and supporting local communities along the route.

Spiti is magical in itself, but the way this Heaven Riders planned and executed everything made it even more special and unforgettable. From the breathtaking landscapes to the smooth coordination, everything was perfectly managed. A special thanks to Vishal ji for his constant support throughout the journey. He made sure we were comfortable, safe, and enjoying every moment. What I really appreciated was that he didn’t just stick to the itinerary — he also showed us extra places that weren’t even mentioned, which made the experience even more memorable. Every small detail was taken care of, and the entire trip felt well-organized and stress-free. I created memories for a lifetime. I don't post reviews at all but for this I had to. Thanks to heaven riders, I managed to complete one of the most difficult courses in high altitude mountaineering. This would not have been possible without the brilliance of our mentor Mr. Vishal Thakur. Under his leadership and guidance, the whole week was packed with adventures and learnings. I would also like to thank Ms. Kalpana, who made all the ends meet with her patience and constant coordination with us. Everything was handled very seamlessly. Heavenridersindia team is indeed very professional. Thank you so much 🙏🏻Posted on Google AbhishreeTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. I have no words to express my gratitude to Mr. Vishal Thakur and his team. I went for an ice climbing course to Spiti valley with their team. This is supposed to be one of the toughest courses at high altitude areas. In chilling temperatures of minus 28 degrees, tough climbs at high altitudes as well as scaling the whole waterfall, Vishal Thakur was an absolute epitome of leadership and technical expertise. He believed in me more than I did in myself. The course was an absolute success! I will definitely be coming back for the advanced course! Everything from the logistics to the stay to the food and the teaching was managed impeccably. As a special mention, I want to thank Ms. Kalpana as well who was coordinating with me throughout the journey and made sure she was available even in the wee hours of the morning without a single complaint. The whole team clearly works for a common purpose.Posted on Google Swastika GangulyTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google.
