Kareri Lake is a freshwater high altitude tarn situated on 2934 meters above sea level and less explored trekking destination in the Dhauladhars. It is also known as gateway to the Chamba Valley and shepherds opt the Kareri-Minkiani Pass & Baleni Pass to cross over the Dhauladhars.

Kareri lake trek begins near to a bridge after crossing the Kareri village. Beginning part of the trek is moderate but once you cross the stream you’ll find it pretty and serene. Few Gaddi-kothis are present on the other side of the lake. The lake remains frozen from early December to March and April. The lake is a perfect getaway for extended weekend trekking. Kareri lake trek is meant for beginners and experienced trekkers as well.

Day 1: Arrive Dharamshala, Drive towards Kareri Village( 2 hours), Trek to Base Camp(4hrs)

• 2 hour drive to Kareri village
• 6km, 4-5 hours trek

Your pick up will be arranged from Dharamshala at 8am in the morning and drive to Kareri Village. It will be a two hour journey, enjoy the scenic drive. Start the trek where you will pass through forest and grasslands. There is a slight ascent. You will be completing the 6km trek in 4 hours. Enjoy the breathtaking beauty and camp at the riverside for the night. Evening snacks and dinner will be served. Stay in camps.

Day 2: Base Camp to Kareri Lake and return (5-6 hours)

• 7km, 6-7 hours, enjoy the views at Kareri lake
• Enough water through the trail
• Easy-Moderate trail.

Today you will be moving to Kareri Lake which is at the height of 9,800ft. The trail will surprise you as you will walk through Oak, Pine and Rhododendron trees. The trail also passes through small water streams and rivers. It will take almost 4-5hours to reach the lake as it has some steep climbs. Enjoy the beauty of Dhauladhar range and the lake view. Refreshments would be provided. Later you'll be return to the base camp. Dinner will be served at base camp.

Day 3: Base Camp to Kareri Village(2-3 hours), drive to Dharamshala(2 hours drive)

• 6km, 2-3 hours trek to Kareri village

• Drive to Dharamshala, drop at ISBT only

We head back to the same trail treading through oak, pine trees which would take between 2- 3 hours and back from there to Dharamshala by four wheeler, will reach Dharamshala around 4 in the evening. Drop point would be ISBT, Dharamshala.

  • Waterproof Trekking Shoes with Good Grip.
  • Cold Cream, Sunscreen Lotion, Lip Balm/ Lip Guard, Personal Toilet Kit and Toilet Paper.

- Trekker has to carry his/her backpack by own if someone wants a off-loading, kindly inform in advance while bookings so we can arrange accordingly. Off-loading charges extra.
- Bonfire has been banned on all treks by the forest department, we don’t promise the availability of bonfire.
- Camping near the lake is also banned by the forest department, tents will be pitched at base camp only.

Cancellation Policy

We totally understand that unforeseen circumstances might need you to change plans, and so HRI cancellation policy makes it easier to do that. Please read them very carefully.
  • Cancellations up to 30 days prior to departure date - 10% deduction (payment gateway & bank charges).
  • Between 30 days to 10 days prior to departure - 50% deduction.
  • Less than 10 days of departure - No Refund.
  • In partial payment system, Booking amount is Non-Refundable in any case.
In case of any unforeseen weather conditions, government restrictions, road blockage or any other unavoidable circumstances beyond our control, certain activities during the expedition or the event itself may be cancelled/skipped, or there could be change in the itinerary. In such cases, we will try our best to provide an alternate feasible activity or a voucher will be handed over (in case of cancellation or rescheduling of event) to you. However no refund will be provided for the same. In case the trip is cancelled by us for lack of minimum number of people in the batch, you will get a full refund. Also, if you have opted for a trek insurance, rentals, off-loading & other activities the amount will not be refunded. In partial payment system, booking amount is Non-Refundable in any case. All refunds will be processed back to the same bank account or the credit card account from which the amount has been paid. The amount for refund will be processed within 10 working days. Refund amount would always be calculated basis the net amount paid* for booking of the event & the Base Price of the event (excluding all additional services transport, rent, portage, etc.). Any voucher issued would not include the service tax amount paid while making the booking.

Health & Fitness

The Kareri lake is considered as an easy trek in nature. The trek goes upto over 9,600ft. for that you need basic physical fitness. It's best for beginners & nature lovers. Kareri lake trek requires a basic amount of cardiovascular endurance. And you might be thinking how to make your lungs strong? Firstly, start by jogging 4 days a week. Start jogging at a slow pace and keep increasing day by day. This will make your lungs stronger than before hence cardiovascular endurance exercises are very important.   The Workouts
  • Walking is a great exercise that gives great shape to your legs and your body. It helps in burning calories and cut down excess weight and strengthens the heart.
  • Jogging is effective in increasing human lifespan and makes your lungs stronger. It is an aerobic activity that requires a lot of oxygen. This is a great exercise for fighting obesity and staying healthy.
  • Squats are the best form of functional exercises to improve stability. It will train your muscles to climb steep sections easily.
  • 3 Sets each of Pull-ups, Push-Ups, Sprints, Mountain Climber, & 60 Seconds Plank.
  • Another great cardio vascular exercise is pushing your body upstairs after stairs. This is regarded as the best exercise for increasing strength and power.
  • & finally don't forget to give treat to your body with some Yoga and Meditation in the end.


What documents I have to carry?
You must have to carry both original & copy of valid Govt. Id (Passport/Aadhar card/Driving License), NOC form (by participant), Medical Certificate (signed by a registered MBBS doctor), 2 passport size photos along with you and submit them to Trek Leader at base during briefing.
What kind of toilet facility you are providing?
Toilet tents would be there at campsite. Basically, we use dry toilets which is one of the best way to answer nature call in the wilderness. Dry toilets means, we dig a pit and keep mud & shovel so once you are done with your business you can cover it up using mud. It is the most hygienic way. You should carry toiletries as we mentioned in the things to carry/essentials.
How many trekkers will be in one tent?
There will be three persons accommodating in one tent. If you want tent for One or Two, please ask while bookings. Customization available on extra cost.
I'm the solo female traveler, is it safe?
Girls safety is important to us. Our entire mountain staff & guides are extremely trust worthy. Many solo woman travelers trek with us so there's no worry about it. We would advise all to take care of your belongings.
Is Diamox advisable and I should bring some medicines with me?
No but in case you are having so please consult with doctor bcz there are lot's of myths about Diamox.

Yes personal medicines are advisable during any trekking expedition weather organizers carrying it or not.
What type of food is served during trek?
We serve nutritious Indian vegetarian food with eggs. Jain food also available on request please ask while bookings.
How big are the groups?
We at HRI believe in the concept of Small batches' that improves quality & focus. Max 15 members of group strength that helps trek leader to get connect all members. For private groups there's no limit of group size.
How much weight do I have to carry?
Your load will depends on things that are packed by you in the sack. On an average trekker's carry between 5-7 kg of weight with clothing’s, cameras, energy bars, dry fruits, water bottle etc. Off-loading option available on extra cost. Please ask while bookings.
What if an emergency occurred?
In any case of any emergency our mountain staff is skilled and trained for such situations held at high altitude. Our team always carry first aid kit, oximeter and portable oxygen with us and in any emergency we'll rescue the trekker till the road head. All of the costs of rescue/evacuation, hospitalization is to borne by the trekker. All and all it is trekkers responsibility to get a certified medical fitness document before coming for the trek, which certifies that the trekker is fit for the trek. We advise you to come with insurance.
Can I charge my phone on the trek?
No you won’t find any charging point. You have to carry a power bank to charge your phone & digital camera.
Can I do calls during the trek?
No you wouldn’t find any network during trek. Please share this with anxious family members in advance.
Which type of shoes should I buy?
Good trekking shoes are the most important part of the trek, so you have to be very careful before buying it. Always buy .5 or 1.0 extra size for better results. You can buy trekking shoes from Decathlon which includes brands like Quechua.
Can take or have smokes or liquor on the trek?
No, absolutely not. Smoking & Liquor is strictly not allowed during the trek. This causes dehydration on higher altitude which is an invitation to Acute Mountain Sickness. We recommend you not to take such things along.
What if the trek is cancelled due to natural calamities?
Trek preparations are already done previously. We will be offering you any alternate trek or voucher having similar value for money in case of natural calamities. In case of non-completion of trek due to weather conditions etc there wont be any refund. Read cancellation policy.
