Overview

Patalsu peak trek is a moderately easy trek that gives you the indescribable feeling you earn from a summit climb. The trek starts from Solang, climbing through lush meadows and dense forests of pine, deodar and oak inhabited by Monal’s and Pheasants among other fauna and ends with a summit climb.

Patalsu peak is situated in Manali at 4,200 meters above sea level. The summit of Patalsu peak offers magnificent panoramic views of Hanuman Tibba, Deo Tibba, Indrasan, Friendship peak, Shitidhar and the entire Kullu valley.

The Patalsu trek is also an excellent opportunity to prepare for more challenging climbs in the future. As a beginner’s peak, it allows you to gain valuable experience and develop the necessary skills for more demanding climbs in the future, including peaks that reach an altitude of 5,000 meters or more like Friendship peak, Shitidhar, etc.

Patalsu peak is the best experience for beginners, amateurs as well as seasoned trekkers.

Why Choose the Patalsu Peak Trek?

Manali is often associated with popular treks like Hampta Pass and Beas Kund, but Patalsu Peak remains comparatively untouched by heavy crowds, making it a hidden gem for those who prefer solitude in the mountains. Here is why this trek stands out:

  • Short duration, high reward: Most itineraries wrap up in 2 to 3 days, making it ideal for working professionals or students with limited leave.
  • Panoramic 360-degree views: From the summit, you can see the Dhauladhar range, Pir Panjal peaks, the Solang Valley, and on clear days, even glimpses of Deo Tibba and Hanuman Tibba.
  • Accessible base point: The trek begins near Solang Valley or Sethan village, both easily reachable from Manali town by road.
  • Diverse landscapes: The trail moves through dense pine and oak forests, open meadows, and finally rocky, snow-dusted terrain near the summit.
  • Ideal for acclimatization: Because of its moderate altitude gain, it also serves as a great warm-up trek before attempting higher Himalayan expeditions.

For anyone searching for a short but soul-satisfying escape into the mountains, the Patalsu Peak Trek checks every box.

Best Time to Do the Patalsu Peak Trek

Timing plays a crucial role in how enjoyable and safe your trek will be. Here’s a breakdown of the seasons:

May to June: This period offers moderate temperatures, blooming meadows, and relatively clear trails, though patches of snow may still be present near the summit, adding a touch of adventure for those who enjoy a bit of snow trekking.

July to August: This is monsoon season in Himachal Pradesh, and while the landscape turns lush green, the trails can become slippery and visibility may be reduced due to fog and rain. Heaven Riders India generally advises against attempting this trek during peak monsoon months unless you’re an experienced trekker comfortable with wet conditions.

September to October: Considered the best window for the Patalsu Peak Trek, this period offers crisp, clear skies, stable weather, and excellent visibility for those long-range Himalayan views. The temperatures are cooler but pleasant, making for comfortable trekking conditions.

November onwards: Snowfall begins to set in at higher altitudes, and the trek becomes significantly more challenging, requiring proper winter gear and experience in snow trekking.

For most trekkers, especially beginners, planning your trip between May-June or September-October will give you the best balance of good weather and manageable difficulty.

How to Reach Manali?

The Pickup point and Drop Point will be The Mall Road, Manali.

By Air: The nearest airport is in Bhuntar which is 11km from Kullu and 52 km from Manali. You can take a taxi from Bhuntar to Manali.  To reach Manali by air, you need to have a connecting flight via Delhi or Chandigarh. Delhi or Chandigarh is well connected to major airports across the country.

By Road: You can take an overnight Volvo bus from Delhi to Manali or Chandigarh to Manali. Manali is well connected to both of the cities with a four-lane highway. The roads are in good condition but there are sudden landslides in the monsoon season. The bus from Delhi to Manali can take up to 10-12 hours and from Chandigarh to Manali is 8-10 hours at least.

You should always take the Himsuta bus from HRTC (Himachal Govt. Bus) as they are the most comfortable & trusted government buses on this route. Plan your onward journeys only post noon giving enough buffer for bus delays.

By Train: We do not recommend you travel by train as the closest railway station, Joginder Nagar is 6 hours away, which you will again have to cover by bus or cab. It’s better to come to Delhi to Chandigarh and then book an overnight Volvo bus to Manali. Volvo buses are the best option of all.

We recommend arriving in Dehradun at least a day before your scheduled trek departure, since the drive to Gangotri itself takes up most of a full day. Uttarkashi is the last town with reliable ATMs, so it’s wise to withdraw cash in Dehradun before heading further into the mountains.
