Why the Kashmir Great Lakes Trek is So Special

Kashmir has long been called “Paradise on Earth,” and once you set foot on this trail, you will understand exactly why. Unlike many other treks in India that focus on a single destination, this trek is a chain of experiences. Each day brings a new landscape, a new lake, and a new perspective of the surrounding mountains.

The trek gets its name from the series of high-altitude lakes you encounter along the way, including Vishansar Lake, Kishansar Lake, Gadsar Lake, Satsar Lake, and Gangabal Lake. Each of these lakes has its own personality. Some are calm and mirror-like, perfectly reflecting the peaks around them, while others are surrounded by wildflowers and grazing sheep, giving the entire trail a dreamlike quality.

What makes the Kashmir Great Lakes Trek truly unique is the diversity of terrain. Trekkers pass through dense forests of pine and birch, wide open meadows dotted with gujjar settlements, rocky mountain passes, and glacial valleys, all within a span of about seven to eight days. This variety keeps the journey exciting from start to finish and is one of the biggest reasons this trek has become so popular among Indian and international trekkers alike.

Health & Fitness

Trekking demands strong cardiovascular endurance, leg power, core stability, and overall stamina to handle long hours on steep, uneven, and rocky terrain. Depending on the difficulty level, trekkers should ideally be capable of jogging 4–7 km in 20–40 minutes.

Preparing your body in advance significantly enhances safety, performance, and enjoyment during the trek.

Core Physical Fitness Requirements

1. Cardiovascular Endurance

Strong heart and lung capacity are essential, especially for high-altitude treks where oxygen levels are lower.

Training Goal:

  • 30–60 minutes of cardio
  • 4–5 days per week
  • Activities: Jogging, running, brisk walking, swimming, or cycling

2. Leg Strength

Powerful legs are crucial for ascending steep slopes and descending uneven, rocky paths.

Focus Exercises:

  • Squats
  • Lunges
  • Step-ups
  • Calf raises

3. Core & Upper Body Strength

A strong core and upper body help you carry a backpack comfortably for extended hours.

Recommended Exercises:

  • Planks
  • Push-ups
  • Overhead presses
  • Back extensions

4. Flexibility & Stamina

Flexibility reduces muscle stiffness, prevents injury, and improves endurance.

Include:

  • Yoga
  • Dynamic stretching before workouts
  • Static stretching post-workout

Training & Preparation Tips

Stair Climbing

One of the most effective ways to simulate trekking conditions. It prepares you for both ascent and descent.

Load Training

Practice walking with a weighted backpack to replicate real trek conditions.

Rest & Recovery

Allow proper recovery time. Include at least 1–2 rest days per week to prevent overtraining.

Health Check-Up

Consult a medical professional before high-altitude treks, especially if you have:

  • Asthma
  • Hypertension
  • Heart conditions
  • Respiratory concerns

Sample Weekly Training Plan (Example)

Monday / Wednesday / Friday
→ 30–45 minutes brisk walk, jogging, or uphill walking

Tuesday / Thursday
→ Strength training (Squats, Lunges, Planks, Push-ups)

Saturday
→ Long-duration hike or extended stair-climbing session

Sunday
→ Rest day or light stretching / yoga

Key Preparation Goals

  • Build endurance to comfortably carry a weighted backpack for 3–4 hours
  • Achieve the ability to jog 5 km in under 30 minutes (for moderate treks)

Begin structured training 4–8 weeks before your trek

This was truly the best trip of my life! Spiti is magical in itself, but the way this Heaven Riders planned and executed everything made it even more special and unforgettable. From the breathtaking landscapes to the smooth coordination, everything was perfectly managed. A special thanks to Vishal ji for his constant support throughout the journey. He made sure we were comfortable, safe, and enjoying every moment. What I really appreciated was that he didn’t just stick to the itinerary — he also showed us extra places that weren’t even mentioned, which made the experience even more memorable. Every small detail was taken care of, and the entire trip felt well-organized and stress-free. I created memories for a lifetime. Highly recommended to anyone planning a Spiti trip — you can trust them completely for an amazing experience! 🌄✨ Looking forward to many more trips together in the future😊

I don't post reviews at all but for this I had to. Thanks to heaven riders, I managed to complete one of the most difficult courses in high altitude mountaineering. This would not have been possible without the brilliance of our mentor Mr. Vishal Thakur. Under his leadership and guidance, the whole week was packed with adventures and learnings. I would also like to thank Ms. Kalpana, who made all the ends meet with her patience and constant coordination with us. Everything was handled very seamlessly. Heavenridersindia team is indeed very professional. Thank you so much 🙏🏻

I have no words to express my gratitude to Mr. Vishal Thakur and his team. I went for an ice climbing course to Spiti valley with their team. This is supposed to be one of the toughest courses at high altitude areas. In chilling temperatures of minus 28 degrees, tough climbs at high altitudes as well as scaling the whole waterfall, Vishal Thakur was an absolute epitome of leadership and technical expertise. He believed in me more than I did in myself. The course was an absolute success! I will definitely be coming back for the advanced course! Everything from the logistics to the stay to the food and the teaching was managed impeccably. As a special mention, I want to thank Ms. Kalpana as well who was coordinating with me throughout the journey and made sure she was available even in the wee hours of the morning without a single complaint. The whole team clearly works for a common purpose.
