Overview

The Churdhar Trek is one of the most breathtaking trails in the outer Himalayas. With 360-degree panoramic vistas, the Churdhar trek leads you to the highest peak in the outside Himalayan range.

At the top of the Churdhar Trek peak, a giant statue of Lord Shiva amazes as well as takes you back to the tales of the great Indian epics like Mahabharata and Ramayana. From Churdhar Summit, one can see views of Shimla Region, Kinner-Kailash & Shrikhand Mahadev Mountain Ranges. Churdhar Peak is surrounded by a 56 Km square forest sanctuary.

If you are lucky, then a Musk Deer or a Monal might make a sight. This journey is suitable for both novices and expert hikers and is an excellent weekend activity for nature lovers. One can find snow on its upper ridges all around. You may get some of the most enticing views of the mighty Himalayas from here.

Heaven Riders India offers you an opportunity to summit Churdhar Trek Peak. The trip starts and ends at the city beautiful ‘Chandigarh‘.

Why Choose the Churdhar Trek?

The Churdhar Trek stands out among Himachal’s many trekking options for several reasons. Unlike some of the more commercialized trails in Manali or Kasol, Churdhar retains a raw, untouched charm. The trail takes you through thick oak and deodar forests, past grazing meadows known locally as “thaches,” and finally to a summit that offers uninterrupted 360-degree views of snow-capped peaks, including glimpses of the Shivalik ranges and, on a clear day, even distant views resembling the shape of the Himalayan crest.

One of the most fascinating aspects of this trek is its spiritual significance. The summit is home to the Shirgul Maharaj Temple, dedicated to a local deity worshipped widely across Sirmaur and Shimla districts. Thousands of pilgrims and trekkers visit this temple every year, making the Churdhar Trek a unique blend of adventure tourism and religious pilgrimage.

For trekkers based in Delhi, Chandigarh, or nearby regions, Churdhar is also an excellent short getaway. It doesn’t require the extensive planning or high-altitude acclimatization that treks like Hampta Pass or Kedarkantha demand, yet it delivers a genuinely rewarding mountain experience within a short 2 to 3 day itinerary.

Location and How to Reach Churdhar

Churdhar peak lies in the Churdhar Wildlife Sanctuary, part of the Sirmaur district of Himachal Pradesh, close to the towns of Nohradhar and Sarahan (not to be confused with the more famous Sarahan near Shimla). The trek typically begins from either Nohradhar or Haripurdhar, both of which are well connected by road.

By Air: The nearest airport is Shimla Airport (Jubbarhatti), roughly 90 to 100 kilometers away. Chandigarh Airport, being a larger hub with better flight connectivity, is a more practical option for most travelers, located about 130 to 150 kilometers from the base village.

By Rail: The nearest railway station is Kalka or Shimla, both connected to Delhi via regular train services, including the scenic Kalka-Shimla toy train.

By Road: Nohradhar, the most common starting point for the Churdhar Trek, is well connected by road from Shimla, Solan, and Chandigarh. Regular buses and taxis operate on this route, and the drive itself is scenic, winding through pine forests and small Himachali villages.

At Heaven Riders India, we offer complete transportation assistance from Delhi, Chandigarh, and Shimla, so you don’t have to worry about navigating multiple bus changes or unreliable local transport.

Best Time to Visit for the Churdhar Trek

Timing plays a crucial role in how much you enjoy this trek, and Churdhar offers distinctly different experiences across seasons.

Summer (April to June): This is the most popular season for the Churdhar Trek. The weather is pleasant, trails are clear of snow, and the meadows are lush green. Daytime temperatures at the base hover between 15°C and 25°C, while the summit can be considerably cooler.

Monsoon (July to August): This period is generally avoided due to slippery trails, leech activity in the forested sections, and the risk of landslides on approach roads. We at Heaven Riders India do not recommend this season for the Churdhar Trek unless you’re an experienced monsoon trekker.

Autumn (September to November): A criminally underrated time to visit. The skies are clear, visibility is excellent, and the forest takes on beautiful autumn hues. Temperatures start dropping, especially at night, so warm layers are essential.

Winter (December to March): This is when Churdhar transforms into a snow-covered wonderland. The trek becomes significantly more challenging, requiring proper gear, experience, and often the guidance of professional trek leaders. Snow trekking to Churdhar in winter is a favorite among adventure enthusiasts who want a taste of high-altitude snow trekking without traveling too far from Delhi or Chandigarh. Heaven Riders India runs specialized winter batches for the Churdhar Trek with all necessary safety arrangements.

Difficulty Level of the Churdhar Trek

The Churdhar Trek is generally classified as moderate in difficulty, making it accessible to trekkers with basic fitness levels and some prior trekking experience. That said, the trail does involve a steady, continuous ascent, particularly on the final stretch to the summit, which can be tiring for beginners.

Key factors affecting difficulty include:

  • Altitude gain: The trek covers a significant elevation gain over a relatively short distance, which can cause breathlessness for those unaccustomed to high-altitude trekking.
  • Trail conditions: The forested sections have well-defined paths, but rocky and uneven patches appear closer to the summit.
  • Weather variability: Sudden weather changes, especially in winter, can increase the difficulty considerably.

We recommend a basic level of cardiovascular fitness before attempting this trek. At Heaven Riders India, we provide pre-trek fitness guidelines to all our registered trekkers so they arrive prepared and confident.

Flora and Fauna Along the Churdhar Trail

The Churdhar Wildlife Sanctuary, through which the trek passes, is rich in biodiversity. Trekkers pass through dense forests of oak, deodar, and rhododendron, which bloom in vibrant shades of red and pink during the early summer months. The sanctuary is also home to several species, including the Himalayan black bear, barking deer, and a variety of Himalayan bird species. Birdwatchers and nature photographers often find the lower forested sections of the Churdhar Trek just as rewarding as the summit itself.

The Shirgul Maharaj Temple: A Spiritual Highlight

No description of the Churdhar Trek is complete without mentioning the Shirgul Maharaj Temple at the summit. Lord Shirgul is considered a significant deity in the folk traditions of the Sirmaur and Shimla hill regions, and local legend holds that he resides atop Churdhar, watching over the surrounding villages. Many trekkers, including those without a specific religious motivation, find themselves moved by the serenity and spiritual energy of this remote temple, perched at nearly 3,650 meters above sea level. The combination of physical achievement and spiritual reflection at the summit is part of what makes the Churdhar Trek such a distinctive experience compared to purely scenic Himalayan treks.

Camping Experience on the Churdhar Trek

Camping is one of the most memorable parts of this trek. Teesri Dhar, the primary overnight camping spot, is a wide, grassy meadow flanked by dense forest on one side and open sky on the other. Evenings here are typically spent around a bonfire, sharing stories with fellow trekkers, followed by a hot dinner prepared by the trek support staff. Nights can get cold, even during summer months, so a good quality sleeping bag is essential — something Heaven Riders India includes in all our standard packages.

Waking up to birdsong, mist rolling through the trees, and the first light hitting the peak is an experience that captures why so many people fall in love with Himalayan trekking.

Health & Fitness

Trekking demands strong cardiovascular endurance, leg power, core stability, and overall stamina to handle long hours on steep, uneven, and rocky terrain. Depending on the difficulty level, trekkers should ideally be capable of jogging 4–7 km in 20–40 minutes.

Preparing your body in advance significantly enhances safety, performance, and enjoyment during the trek.

Core Physical Fitness Requirements

1. Cardiovascular Endurance

Strong heart and lung capacity are essential, especially for high-altitude treks where oxygen levels are lower.

Training Goal:

  • 30–60 minutes of cardio
  • 4–5 days per week
  • Activities: Jogging, running, brisk walking, swimming, or cycling

2. Leg Strength

Powerful legs are crucial for ascending steep slopes and descending uneven, rocky paths.

Focus Exercises:

  • Squats
  • Lunges
  • Step-ups
  • Calf raises

3. Core & Upper Body Strength

A strong core and upper body help you carry a backpack comfortably for extended hours.

Recommended Exercises:

  • Planks
  • Push-ups
  • Overhead presses
  • Back extensions

4. Flexibility & Stamina

Flexibility reduces muscle stiffness, prevents injury, and improves endurance.

Include:

  • Yoga
  • Dynamic stretching before workouts
  • Static stretching post-workout

Training & Preparation Tips

Stair Climbing

One of the most effective ways to simulate trekking conditions. It prepares you for both ascent and descent.

Load Training

Practice walking with a weighted backpack to replicate real trek conditions.

Rest & Recovery

Allow proper recovery time. Include at least 1–2 rest days per week to prevent overtraining.

Health Check-Up

Consult a medical professional before high-altitude treks, especially if you have:

  • Asthma
  • Hypertension
  • Heart conditions
  • Respiratory concerns

Sample Weekly Training Plan (Example)

Monday / Wednesday / Friday
→ 30–45 minutes brisk walk, jogging, or uphill walking

Tuesday / Thursday
→ Strength training (Squats, Lunges, Planks, Push-ups)

Saturday
→ Long-duration hike or extended stair-climbing session

Sunday
→ Rest day or light stretching / yoga

Key Preparation Goals

  • Build endurance to comfortably carry a weighted backpack for 3–4 hours
  • Achieve the ability to jog 5 km in under 30 minutes (for moderate treks)

Begin structured training 4–8 weeks before your trek
